How to prepare your AFS exchange application
AFS programs vary by country, but most applications share the same building blocks: forms, health paperwork, teacher references, essays, and interviews. This guide explains how to prepare each part using free and Premium tools on IQ Abroad.
Before you start
Visit your national AFS website and download the official timeline. Note age limits, GPA expectations, and language requirements. IQ Abroad supplements - not replaces - those instructions.
Talk with parents early about finances, school approval, and host-family expectations. Many delays happen because families discover requirements late.
AFS motivation essays
AFS essays usually explore cultural curiosity, adaptability, and how you handle misunderstandings. Use specific stories: a time you helped a newcomer, learned a tradition, or fixed a communication mistake.
Avoid generic praise of “travel.” Instead explain what you hope to learn about daily life abroad and what you will share from home - food, music, holidays, or school projects.
Practice in the AFS essay track on IQ Abroad. Compare strong and weak samples, then draft answers in your own words.
Recommendations and school records
Choose teachers who know your character, not only your grades. Give them a short bullet list of your activities and the deadline.
Keep transcripts and medical forms organized in one folder. Scan documents at high quality; blurry uploads slow review.
Interviews
AFS interviews may involve students and parents separately. Prepare honest answers about chores, rules, and homesickness coping strategies.
Review our interview preparation guide and practice aloud weekly. Communities on IQ Abroad let you exchange mock questions with other AFS applicants.
