A 12-month timeline to prepare for FLEX
FLEX deadlines differ by country, but most FLEX applicants benefit from spreading preparation across a full school year. Use this FLEX calendar as a flexible checklist - adjust dates to your national FLEX office announcements.
Months 12 - 10 before application: foundation
Confirm age and grade requirements on official sites. Tell your family about your goal so they can support logistics and paperwork later.
Stabilize grades: selection committees notice trends. Add one meaningful activity rather than joining ten clubs without participation.
Start daily English input - podcasts, graded readers, or short writing. On IQ Abroad, favorite essay topics and read two examples per week.
Months 9 - 7: writing and testing
Draft two practice essays per month using different prompts. Keep a folder of stories that might become interview answers.
Register for required English tests if applicable. Simulate timed conditions once a month.
Join a Community on IQ Abroad for your target program year; share resources and accountability with peers.
Months 6 - 4: application season
Finalize essays with teacher or peer review. Cut generic sentences and verify facts (school name, dates, activities).
Gather documents early: transcripts, recommendations, medical forms. Scan copies in one secure folder.
Explore Content Hub creators who document selection experiences - useful for interview mindset, not as official advice.
Months 3 - 1: interviews and finals
Run mock interviews weekly. Practice answering in both English and your native language if your process uses both.
Sleep and routines matter more than last-minute cramming. Prepare questions you want to ask interviewers - it shows engagement.
If you receive alternate status or waitlists, stay polite and continue improving English; many students reapply successfully.
After selection: before departure
Thank mentors who wrote recommendations. Document cultural traditions you might share abroad - photos, recipes, music lists.
Stay active on IQ Abroad to help next year’s applicants; teaching others reinforces your own skills.
Remember: preparation is a habit. The platform stays available for university research, language practice, and Content Hub even after exchange.
