FLEX costs: what the program pays and monthly stipend
Many FLEX applicants ask whether their family must pay for the year abroad. For students selected through FLEX in participating countries, the grant is designed to cover the core exchange experience. This page explains FLEX first, then brief notes on other programs.
FLEX: program-covered costs
For FLEX finalists from eligible countries, FLEX covers the major costs of the exchange year: international travel, placement with a U.S. host family, school enrollment, program insurance, and coordinator support as described in official FLEX materials for your country.
In practice, families do not pay a separate program tuition for the FLEX year itself. You still follow official instructions for passports, local paperwork, and any items the national office lists as the student’s responsibility.
FLEX monthly stipend (about 100 USD)
FLEX participants receive a monthly stipend of about 100 U.S. dollars during the program year for personal spending (pocket money). Amounts and payment method are set by the program; confirm the current figure on your FLEX country website before departure.
Use the stipend for everyday items, small activities, or savings habits you agree on with your host family. It is not meant to cover large purchases or travel outside program rules.
Budgeting before FLEX selection
While you prepare for FLEX tests, essays, and interviews, focus on academic readiness rather than fundraising for the year itself.
Families may still plan for a home emergency fund, phone accessories, or gifts, but FLEX is structured so selected students are not paying full exchange tuition out of pocket.
AFS, YFU, and Rotary (different models)
Other exchanges may charge program fees or expect families to cover flights and insurance. Always download the fee sheet from your national AFS, YFU, or Rotary office if you apply there in parallel with FLEX.
